A method (400) for producing books in a bookbinding system is proposed. The method (400) includes the steps of: binding (409) blocks of signatures in succession by means of at least one binding machine, associating (421-427;436-454) a transponder with at least one selected of the blocks of signatures inside each binding machine, emitting (457) an interrogation signal outside the at least one binding machine, and sensing (457-475) at least one characteristic of each selected block of signatures according to a response signal being returned by the corresponding transponder in response to the interrogation signal.
