A steerable ultra-low patient bed that incorporates means for maintaining verticality of the caster stem at all height positions of the bed and a means for selectively locking the caster assemblies of the bed in a desired position. The means for selectively locking the caster assemblies may be actuated from either end of the bed using a 5 central actuation mechanism (Fig.4). The bed has legs (20, 21 Fig.3) that are pivotally and translatably attached at their upper end to a frame (22, Fig.3) of the bed and at their lower end pivotally attached to caster support members (23, Fig.3) that are longitunally aligned with the bed. The casters support members each have a single caster assembly (24, Fig.3) attached thereto. Casters are locked against rotation (braking) and/or swivelling. Central actuation may be via hydraulic, Bowden cable, or telescoping mechanical linkages 90, 93, 92 connected by universal joints. The wheels can be locked against swivelling at either end by a foot pedal and simultaneously unlocked at the opposite end of the bed for improved steering. |
