Networked attached storage with external heterogeneous storage devices

A networked attached storage (NAS) device 1100 is connected to a host computer and one or more external storage devices 5201-2. The external devices may be of a different type, such as a WORM device, to the storage devices 180-183 within the NAS device. The NAS device can create a file system SFS1-2 on the external storage devices. It can copy or move files or file systems PFS1-2 from an internal storage device 181-2 to an external one or from one external device to another. The file system may be erased from the source device. The file systems on several devices may be viewed as a single file system from the host. The file system on the external device may be marked as read only. A management device may be used to instruct or configure the storage system to copy the data.
