Heading B7H The independently driven endless tracks or wheel sets on the two sides of a vehicle are controlled by an arrangement including a pair of arcuate slideways 19, 20 mounted to pivot on a common axis or shaft 21 and each engaged by a slider at one end 17, 18 of a connecting-rod 11, 12 of length equal to the effective radius of curvature of the slideways, the other end 22, 23 of the connecting rod controlling the drive to one of the tracks or wheel sets. In Fig. 1 the connecting rods 11, 12 control the output of hydraulic pumps 101, 102, which may be driven by the same or separate engines, connected to motors 103, 104 geared to the individual tracks or wheel sets. The control arrangement, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 7, is such that downward movement of the ends 17, 18 of the connecting rods provides forward motion of the vehicle and upward movement reverse motion and the relationship between the track or wheel speeds is determined by the relative distances of the ends 17, 18 from the axis of shaft 21 (Figs. 9 to 12, not shown). The output of a pump and motor is zero when the corresponding connecting rod end is on the axis of shaft 21 or when the slideways are as shown in full lines in Fig. 7. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 13, 14 a lever 37 is secured to shaft 21 to rotate the attached slideways 26, 27 in which move sliders 28, 29 pivoted to the ends 17, 18 of the connecting rods 11, 12. The sliders have teeth 60, 61 by which they are movable along the slideways by pinions 56, 57 loosely mounted on shaft 21 and connected by gear trains to pinions 44, 45 rigid with the shaft 21, the gear trains being such that the pairs of pinions 44, 56 and 45, 57 rotate in unison when shaft 21 is rotated. Each slider is moved along its slideway by movement of lever 50 or 51 while maintaining handle 37 stationary when frame 48 or 49 moves shaft 46 or 47 with the gears 40, 42 or 41, 43 about the stationary pinion 44 or 45 and hence rotates the pinion engaging the corresponding slider. In modifications the lower ends of the connecting rods may move in straight guides and certain of the pinions may be replaced by chain or cable mechanisms or pivoted levers.
