An expiring roll 6, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, of paper or like web and a replacement roll 7 are carried on shafts 4, 5 rotatable by a yoke 3 about a pivot 2. The roll 7 has temporarily attached thereto by hooks 21 and springs 20 a roller 18 pressing against its surface behind the adhesivecoated leading edge portion 17. The pivot is rotated to bring the roll 7 into position to press the running web against a roller 12, Fig. 2, the roll 7 being retained in its original angular aspect. When the roll 6 has almost expired, a brake for the shaft 5 is released, and the running web accelerates the roll 7 until the latter and the running web are moving at the same speed, when the roller 12 presses the adhesive-coated portion against the running web for splicing, Fig. 3. The roller 18 presses the running web against a knife 13 to be severed, and the abutment of the roller 18 against the knife cause the hooks to come off the shaft 5 and the roller 18 and its assembly to fall into a receptacle 16. |
