A card index particularly for telephone numbers comprises a stack of index cards 5 contained in a drawer 3 slidable in a casing 2, and selection keys 29 individually operable to engage a tab 11 of the corresponding index card whereby a selected card is constrained to move with the drawer, while the remaining cards are held stationary in the casing by releasable holding means 17 engaging tabs 9 at the rear of the index cards. The tabs 9 and 11 are spaced laterally and rest on inclined members 14 and 24, respectively. The keys 29 have shanks which enter aligned apertures 12 and 26 in the associated tabs 11 and member 24. The releasable holding means comprise spring fingers 17 or rollers mounted on a sectorshaped shaft to permit limited rotation only. In addition, the keys 29 may be pivoted to the front of the drawer and act to press friction blocks against the tabs 11. The friction blocks may be attached to a single resilient member 55, Fig. 11 (not shown). Said member is fixed to the front of the drawer and partitions 57 provided between the friction blocks to limit the action of each key 29 to a single index card. The drawer is provided with automatic return means. The casing may be adapted to support a telephone. |
