PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an application apparatus capable of forming a uniform coating film over the whole width of a web. SOLUTION: The apparatus applies an aqueous suspension of a pigment suspended in a viscous medium to one surface of a moving paper, carton or other fiber web. The apparatus is provided with a curtain applicator 5 to discharge a coating medium in the form of a free-falling self-contained curtain 6 directly moving under the gravity on one web side or coating side 1a of the moving fiber web 1. An attenuating or eliminating apparatus 2 for an air boundary layer assigned to the coating side 1a is placed at the upstream side of the curtain 6 in the moving direction L of the fiber web 1. The apparatus is further provided with an air boundary layer decreasing device 10 for the air boundary layer LG flowing together with the fiber web 1 and the decreasing device 10 is assigned to the web side 1b opposite to the coating side 1a in the region of the collision position P of the curtain 6.
