PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for measuring the distribution of polarization mode dispersion of an optical fiber in a longitudinal direction capable of solving problems for higher speed, longer distance, and larger capacity of optical communication. SOLUTION: The method of measuring polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in longitudinal direction of the optical fiber is performed as follows: the polarization signal of the optical fiber including at least either of parallel or vertical polarization component in the back scattering in the return of the optical fiber in which an optical pulse with prescribed wave length is made incident, is outputted; a polarization signal regarding the modeled optical fiber is outputted based on the previously modeled prescribed model variables by simulation; degree of fitness between two polarization signals is determined, if preferable degree of fitness is obtained, the measurements are repeated by varying the wave length of the pulse; the delay group difference (DGD) is calculated based on the calculated model variables of modeled optical fiber having wave length dependency; and the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is calculated based on the DGD.
