Fibres of aromatic polyesters, cellulose-2 1/2 -and tri-acetates, polyolefins and acrylonitrile polymers are treated with dyes or optical brightening agents containing at least one residue of an addition compound of an aliphatically bound aldehyde group with sodium bisulphite or sulphoxylic acid, said dye or brightener being, otherwise, free from -SO3H and -COOH groups. The preferred residue being -CH(OH)SO3M where M is an alkali metal cation and it may be attached in a number of specified ways. The dyes may be applied as aqueous solutions at pH 4-8 which may also contain soap, non-ionic emulsifiers, anionic dispersants and carriers for polyester fibres. It is assumed that the dye is absorbed by the fibre in its water-insoluble aldehyde form. A large number of dyes and one brightening agent are listed in the examples. |
