Disclosed is a catalyst of propylene dimerization having excellent propylene dimerization activity. Also disclosed is a method for producing 4-methyl-1-pentene using such a catalyst. Specifically disclosed is a catalyst of propylene dimerization containing a transition metal complex compound [A], and if necessary, at least one compound [B] selected from the group consisting of organic metal compounds (b-1), organic aluminum oxy compounds (b-2) and compounds (b-3) which form an ion pair by reacting with the transition metal complex compound [A]. Also specifically disclosed is a method for dimerizing propylene by using such a catalyst.
