A textile fabric (1) is fed past sensors (5) to measure any distortion and is then passed over at least one skew roller to correct any linear distortion. The edges are then held in a transport conveyor (8) and the fabric brought into friction contact with at least two belts (10, 11) or cords that are separately driven (12, 13) to eliminate any non-linear, e.g. S-shaped distortion. The drives (12, 13) can drive some belts in a direction opposite to the fabric movement direction (9). The belts can be of circular, square or rectangular section and are cleaned by a washing arrangement (16). An independent claim is included for a stenter, e.g. for steam or wet treatment, which includes such a fabric straightening arrangement.
