PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve transmission quality while reducing power consumption.

SOLUTION: This method for driving a laser device, wherein a predetermined driving current is supplied to the laser device to make it emit light, comprises a first process for supplying a preliminary current (ith) smaller than the driving current to the laser device for a time t1 from the time at which the laser device is made to emit light, and a second process for supplying the driving current (id) to the laser device for a time t2 from the time at which the time t1 has been elapsed. In the method, a substantial current is supplied to the laser device in the period other than the time during which the preliminary current or the driving current is supplied.
