<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus preventing occurrence of the fogging of an image caused by a contact type cleaning member for cleaning an intermediate transfer body, and providing a high-quality image. <P>SOLUTION: A cleaning blade 30 is controlled to abut on an intermediate transfer belt 11 after the trailing end of a toner image obtained by superposing a plurality of toner images formed on the intermediate transfer belt 11 passes and before the leading end of a residual toner image left after transfer remaining after secondarily transferring the toner image reaches, and separate therefrom so that the separate position of the cleaning blade may not reach a primary transfer area where primary transfer is performed before the leading end of the toner image primarily transferred first in a next image forming process reaches.
