PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound useful for optical resolution of an amino acid or amino alcohol and optical transformation between D-isomer and L-isomer of an amino acid. SOLUTION: The binaphthol derivative is represented by chemical formula (1). The binaphthol derivative is used for a method for obtaining an optically pure amino acid or amino alcohol by optically resolving a racemic amino acid or racemic amino alcohol and a method for carrying out optical transformation between D-isomer and L-isomer of an amino acid.
