PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the influence of side erasing during data writing to an adjacent cylinder by switching a data transfer rate between adjacent cylinders. SOLUTION: In each zone, a data transfer rate is set higher in an outer side than in an inner side. Between adjacent cylinders in each zone, in order to give a change to the data transfer rate, two kinds of data transfer rates are set every other cylinder, and read/write parameters are separately optimized in the adjacent cylinders. Then, an average of the two kinds of data transfer rates is regarded as a data transfer rate to determine BPI of each zone. By switching the data transfer rate between the adjacent cylinders, the influence of side erasing during data writing to the adjacent cylinders is reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
