PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device and defocus adjustment method, in which the defocus adjustment appropriate for an inserted optical disk can be performed readily and rapidly, and the quality of the read of the data out of the optical disk or the write of the data to the optical disk can be enhanced, by utilizing the defocus value, determined by the defocus adjustment, as the focus bias value. SOLUTION: The defocus adjustment method comprises a process of storing the range defBT of the defocus value for the smooth operation of the optical disk device PL to a memory section Me, a process of measuring the defocus value "def" of the optical disk Ds inserted into the optical disk device PL, a process of comparing the defocus value "def" and the range defBT of the defocus value, a process of determining the best defocus value, and a process of using the finest defocus value as a focusing bias value.
