PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide magnetic layer thickness measuring instrument which calculates the magnetically effective film thickness of a magnetic recording medium in real time, during a coating application process. SOLUTION: The instrument comprises a light source, capable of outputting linearly polarized light perpendicular to a web under travel, a magnet capable of generating a magnetic field parallel with respect to the web, a photodetecting section capable of measuring the rotation angle of the light reflected by the web, and a computer for computing the thickness of the magnetic layer from the rotation angle.
