PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel having excellent corrosion resistance, toughness and hot workability which has high corrosion resistance in marine/coastal environments and chloride environments, and is suitable as the material for an outer shell, a partition, an aggregate, a hydrofoil or the like as the structural material for a hull, and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel having satisfactory corrosion resistance, toughness and hot workability satisfies the relations of PI: 35 to 40, andδcal: -6 to +4, and the content of intermetallic compounds comprised in the steel is≤0.5%, wherein PI=Cr+3.3(Mo+0.5W)+16N (1), andδcal=2.9(Cr+0.3Si+Mo+0.5W)-2.6(Ni+0.3Mn+0.25Cu+32C+20N)-18 (2). Regarding the method for producing the steel, a slab or a slab after rough hot working is subjected to homogenizing treatment at 1,200 to 1,300°C for≥1 hr for reducing the content of intermetallic compounds in the steel.
