PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continuously coat a plastic optical fiber without increasing transmission loss. SOLUTION: A POF 11 is coated with a coating material 68 by a drawing machine 52. With a first tension gage 62 installed on the upstream side of a transporting means 57, and on the basis of the measurement by the first tension gage 62, an obtained coated POF 17 is controlled in the tension T by a dancer pulley 72 and transported at the same time by the transporting means 57. Where the diameter of the POF 11 is D1 (unit; mm), the tension T is controlled to be 0.5×(D1)<SP>2</SP>to 6.0×(D1)<SP>2</SP>. As a result, the elongation percentage of the POF 11 is controlled to be≤1.0 at the time of coating. No coated POF 17 so obtained has a larger transmission loss compared with the pre-coated POF 11.
