PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner capable of alternatively mounting a dust collecting container or a dust collecting filter and capturing dust well whichever is mounted. SOLUTION: A bottom face wall 41 of a dust collecting chamber 11 is formed with air holes 42 openable/closable with a valve element 45 of an interlocking mechanism 43. When the dust collecting filter is mounted, the air holes 42 are blocked with the valve element 45, but when the dust collecting container is mounted, the dust collecting container 12 comes in contact with the interlocking mechanism 43 to displace the valve element 45 downward to thereby open the air holes 42. When the dust collecting filter is mounted, the interior of the dust collecting chamber 11 is sealed to prevent air from being sucked into the dust collecting chamber 11 from a clearance other than a suction port 7. When the dust collecting container is mounted, dust in the dust collecting container 12 is prevented from being sucked out to leak into the dust collecting chamber 11 due to the air in the dust collecting chamber 11 being sucked out to create a vacuum in the dust collecting chamber 11 when sealing performance between the dust collecting container 12 and an exhaust port 34 is lowered.
