Stabilisation of polyvinyl chloride

Vinyl chloride resins are stabilized by incorporating therein a stabilizer mixture comprising (1) a metal salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, and either an epoxy moiety in said metal carboxylate or a separate compound having at least one epoxy ring therein, and (2) a metal salt of a sulphur-containing carboxylic acid or a metal mercaptide in which the metal is barium, cadmium, calcium or zinc. The vinyl chloride resin may be polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride copolymer. Preferred stabilizer components (1) are cadmium, calcium, barium and zinc salts of epoxy C8- 18 carboxylic acids or mixtures of cadmium, calcium, barium and zinc salts of C8- 18 carboxylic acids with carboxylic acid esters containing 8 to 36 carbon atoms and at least one epoxy group. Preferred stabilizer components (2) are the cadmium, calcium, barium and zinc salts of formulae where R is C8- 18 alkyl, phenyl or monoalkylphenyl and R1 is hydrogen or C1- 4 alkyl; [Q-S-]2M where Q is C12- 18 alkyl or C7-27 alkylphenyl; and where T is C12- 18 alkyl. Examples describe the stabilization of polyvinyl chloride with stabilizer compositions comprising (II) cadmium 9,10-epoxystearate with cadmium 3-n-dodecyl-thiopropionate, cadmium 3-dodecylthio -2- methyl propionate, cadmium 3-phenylthiopropionate, cadmium 2-dodecylthiosuccinate, barium 3-(p-t.-butylphenylthio) propionate, cadmium 3-(p-t.-butylphenylthio)propionate and calcium 3-(p-t.-butylphenylthio)propionate; cadmium 10,11-epoxyundecanoate with cadmium 3-n-dodecylthiopropionate; zinc 10,11-epoxyundecanoate with calcium 3-(p-t.-butylphenylthio)propionate; calcium 9,10-epoxystearate with calcium 3-(p-t.-butylphenylthio) propionate; cadmium 9,10-epoxystearate with cadmium octadecylmercaptide, cadmium dodecylmercaptide, cadmium p-t.-butylphenyl mercaptide, cadmium p-t.-nonylphenyl mercaptide and barium p-t.-butylphenyl mercaptide; cadmium 10,11-epoxyundecanoate with cadmium dodecylmercaptide; cadmium 9,10-12,13-diepoxystearate with cadmium dodecylmercaptide; barium 9,10-epoxystearate with cadmium p-t.-butylphenyl mercaptide; and cadmium undecanoate, cadmium dodecylmercaptide and 3,4-epoxy -6- methylcyclohexylmethyl-3, 4-epoxy -6- methyl cyclohexane carboxylate; and (III) cadmium 3-(p-t.-butylphenylthio) propionate with cadmium 9,10-epoxystearate, cadmium stearate and 3,4-epoxy -6- methylcyclohexylmethyl-3, 4-epoxy -6- methylcyclohexane carboxylate, cadmium stearate and epoxidised soya bean oil, and cadmium stearate and octyl epoxystearate. The stabilized resin compositions may be used for making films and filaments.
