PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head which can enhance the magnetic field gradient and the magnetic field intensity as much as possible in a perpendicular magnetic field. SOLUTION: The magnetic main pole layer 15 is retreated from the write shield layer 40. Since the overlapping area LA for the main magnetic pole layer 15 and the write shield layer 40 to overlap each other rather is made smaller than in the case the main magnetic pole layer 15 is not retreated from the write shield layer 40, the magnetic flux J1 from the main magnetic pole layer 15 to the recording medium 60 is relatively increased and the magnetic leakage flux J2 from the main magnetic pole layer 15 to the write shield layer 40 is relatively decreased.
