PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk apparatus and a firmware updating method, in which it is decided by the optical disk apparatus whether update of firmware is required, then from the result, a host computer can automatically perform updating of the firmware and with the required timing. SOLUTION: The kind of optical disk is discriminated, by reading signal processing information returned from an optical disk processing part and various pieces of information recorded in the disk by a system controller incorporated in the optical disk apparatus 200, when the optical disk is loaded, and it is decided whether existing firmware can cope with the loaded optical disk, and when not, since an interruption informing signal 303 is driven and the latest firmware is obtained from a host computer 100 and the firmware can be updated, thus automatically enabling updating of the firmware and with the required timing.
