PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that can hardly specify the cause of image-quality deterioration in case a smudging has arisen in a linear encoder for detecting the position of the main scan direction of a carriage and the quality of image deteriorates. SOLUTION: When moving the carriage 4 with a recording head 11 by driving a main scan motor 5 with a servo control, if speed information based on the output of the linear encoder 74 represents an abnormal value not lying within the predetermined threshold of a speed-control normal value, the speed information, detection section and number of times of detection (number of times of advent) are stored in the domain required for a nonvolatile memory 104.
