987, 555. Crimping fibres and yarns. MONSANTO CO. Feb. 18, 1964 [March 25, 1963], No. 6748/64. Heading D1F. Three dimensional crimp is imparted to twisted or untwisted yarn or to tow by temporarily laterally and helically distorting and simultaneously heating the yarn-i.e. by means of heated fluid in tube 18-, and then immediately crimping the yarn while in the distorted state-as by crimping gears 12, 14-so that when the yarn resumes its undistorted state it has a three dimensional crimp. Air from electric resistance heaters 44 have a component which passes tangentially into tube 18 to form therein a fluid vortex and a component which is directed downwardly into tube 18. One or both gears 12, 14 are maintained at constant temperature by cooling fluid from tube 56 passing through chamber 54 into ports 52, Fig. 2 (not shown) linking the hollow interior of the gear with the gaps between the gear teeth. The yarn is cooled by fluid in tube 58. The yarn may be of glass, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane, copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride and of vinylidene chloride and another monomer, acrylonitrile containing polymers, copolymers and polymer blends, polyesters, polyamides, and mixtures of fibre forming polymers.
|
