The apparatus has a reader (4) for obtaining information from the code (3) and a controller (5) to convert the information for treatment of the sample. A magazine (6) provides several baskets (7) for tissue samples (1). The baskets each have several compartments (8) to receive object carriers (2). At least one drive (9,10) relatively positions one of the baskets and a supply device (11) such that a carrier can be placed in a free compartment. The controller allows carriers which are to undergo the same treatment to be placed in the same basket taking into account information from the code.
