PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video index image generator for generating and redisplaying the main scene of a video image effectively, and to provide a program for generating a video index image. SOLUTION: A plurality of frames belonging to each segment of a video image segmented, based on the feature of a frame are stored in a database (1)16, and a frame satisfying predetermined conditions is extracted among the plurality of frames as a representative image for that segment at analysis in a segment/main frame-extracting section 24 in a processing unit 10. The representative image thus extracted is displayed on a display 12 and then a new representative image for each segment is searched at a subjectivity/taste-inferring section 26, based on the taste of a user among the plurality of frames stored in the database (1)16.
