PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for underwater sound transmission that are applicable to changes in state in a sea area with simple constitution and transmit data between a 1st point and a 2nd point disposed in water by using an underwater sound. SOLUTION: Instead of a conventional underwater sound transmitting method of transmitting data between two points in water, the method includes a test transmission stage of transmitting a test transmitted sound of a pulse at one of the two points, a test reception stage of receiving a test received sound generated as a result of propagation of the test transmitted sound in water at the other point, a real transmission stage of transmitting a 1st transmitted sound obtained by modulating data at one point and having a 1st signal length Ts, and a real reception stage of receiving a received sound generated as a result of propagation of the 1st transmitted sound in the water at the other point, extracting the 1st transmitted sound from the received sound, and modulating it to obtain data, the 1st signal length being shorter than the time length of a time zone disposed between a direct wave of the test transmitted sound and a reverberant wave after the direct wave.
