<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a signal processor capable of conducting videotape recording for a motion picture data with sufficiently proper image quality. <P>SOLUTION: A signal processor 1 discriminates a type of broadcast program data for videotape recording, and acquires a coding parameter corresponding to the type of the discriminated broadcast program data from the outside through a network interface 108 or an I/O controller 109. The acquired coding parameter is established at an encoder 104. The encoder 104 encodes the broadcast program data for videotape recording according to the established coding parameter. Consequently, the broadcast program data for videotape recording can be encoded using a coding parameter suitable for contents of the broadcast program data.
