Acrylonitrile is prepared by reacting a mixture of at least one butylene, ammonia and oxygen in the gaseous phase and at a temperature of 400 DEG to 525 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a mixture of the oxides of bismuth, molybdenum and vanadium having a vanadium content of 0.5 to 3.0% of the weight of the catalyst. The butylene component may be admixed with propylene, ethylene and paraffins having up to 4 carbon atoms. The reaction may also be conducted in the presence of water vapour. Acetonitrile is produced as a by-product.
