PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the fuel cost and emission at the cold time by promoting warming-up of an engine as much as possible while restraining a local temperature rise in the periphery of cylinders s1 to s4 and partial boiling of cooling water due to such temperature rise by controlling flow of cooling water in water jackets 4, 5 in an engine body part 1 after the start of cooling. SOLUTION: A motor-driven pump 9 is provided instead of a crankshaft drive water pump. The pump is stopped during a predetermined period after the start of cooling the engine, thereby stopping circulation of cooling water in the water jackets 4, 5, and after that, the pump is operated in a pulse control mode, thereby intermittently circulating the cooling water in the water jackets 4, 5. Thus, while radiation of heat from the engine is reduced remarkably, a local temperature rise in the periphery of the cylinders s1 to s4 is restrained. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
