A display device both displays visual information and has a movable (e.g. for tilting, sliding and/or rotation) portion serving as a mechanical actuator generating input signals. The device can display text or graphics and act like a button, slider, switch, dial, joystick, navigation pad, knob or the like. Switches or sensors detect movement of the display 122 or a cover 134 within a housing 124 in which they are constrained. Numerous embodiments are disclosed with different movement combinations and a range of mountings for the display e.g. on a gimbal (fig 12) and/or springs (figs 9-12 and 15-17). The display may also have a touch screen that recognises gestures. The device may be provided in numerous types of electronic device in which it is the primary or only input device, or as a stand alone device. |
