<p><PICT:1076806/C1/1> <PICT:1076806/C1/2> A method of cutting sheets or ribbons of glass consists in making a score line on the glass and then subjecting the sheet or ribbon to bending at each side of the score line, the amplitude of the bending being restricted so that the break occurs at a substantially constant position between the scoring and bending points. A sheet or ribbon of glass 1 conveyed on rollers 2 has a score line 4 made by a cutting tool 3. Bending is effected by a diabolo-shaped member 8 the axis of symmetry of which is directly above the score line, and a roller 6 positioned directly below the score line. The face width of roller 6 is less than the width of member 8 and the angle of the member 8 lies between 1 DEG 30' and 10', the effect being that the break commences at a position 18. The roller 6 and member 8 are fitted to arms 12, 13 of a pincer-like mechanism which has means, such as a spring or ram 15, for pressing the arms towards each other. The bending means is arranged so that the axes of rotation of roller and member 8 remain constantly parallel to the face of the glass sheet and preferably obliquely to the direction of travel of the glass to oppose any tendency of the cut strip to break away by lateral movement; alternatively, they may be perpendicular to the direction of travel in which case a chilled liquid, e.g. water and alcohol, is projected from a distributer 19 against the glass around the score line. The member 8 may be made of steel and the roller 6 of bronze.</p> |
