Acetates are prepared by reacting a monoolefine (2-4C) or an alkyl benzene at an elevated temperature with oxygen and acetic in the presence of a catalyst comprising, or consisting of palladium. The alkyl benzene is benzene substituted by one or two alkyl groups (1-4C) e.g. toluene, p-xylene or ethyl benzene. The acetic acid used is preferably 90%, a glacial, and alkali metal acetates, e.g. potassium and lithium acetates may be included. The catalyst may be on a support, e.g. aluminium oxide, by precipitation with hydrazine hydrate, or reduction with hydrogen from salts. Examples describe the reaction of ethylene, propylene, iso-butylene, toluene and p-xylene to form vinyl, allyl, methallyl, benzyl acetates and p-xylylene glycol di-acetate respectively. Acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, acetone, tertbutanol, tert-butyl acetate and carbon dioxide are also obtained as by-products. |
