An accounting-machine having a travelling record-material carriage and switches which are operated in accordance with data set up in the machine is connected to a tape-recording device, such as a punch, by which characters are recorded in sequence, through a programming unit having sub-sections each adapted to programme the recording on the tape of the characters to be printed in a corresponding column of the material in the carriage, and the various sub-sections are rendered effective under the control of devices mounted on the carriage.
