Epoxidized di-tall oil esters of propylene glycol, ethylene glycol or glycerol, or mixtures thereof (see Division C2) are suitable for use as P.V.C. plasticizers. An example of the use of glycerol diepoxy tallate is included.ALSO:Tall oil is esterified with one of the alcohols glycerol, propylene glycol or ethylene glycol or mixtures thereof in the mol. ratio substantially two moles of tall oil to one mol. of alcohol and the resulting diester is epoxidized, especially with peracetic acid to provide a plasticizer suitable for polyvinyl chloride compositions (see Division C3). In the examples a mixture of oxalic acid and triphenyl phosphite is employed as esterification catalyst in the preparation of the di-tall oil esters of propylene glycol, ethylene glycol and glycerol. The propylene glycol di-tallate is purified prior to epoxidation by passing a solution thereof through a column of ion exchanger.
