The installation (11) comprises a compressed gas source (15) and evacuating means (17), selectively connected to the container (13), by means of a connector line (49). The method comprises the following steps: (a) purging, at least partially of the container (13), then (b) at least partial filling of the container (13). The method further comprises a verification step in which, during the steps (a) and (b), (i) the temperature at at least one point in the connector line (49) is measured, (ii) the variation with time of said temperature is recorded, (iii) said variation is compared with a reference curve and (iv) the quality of filling of the container (13) is estimated as a function of the result of said comparison. The above is of application to the filling of gas bottles for medical use.
