A solution suitable for use for the production of filaments, films or other shaped articles by extrusion through a shaping orifice into a coagulant medium comprises a linear condensation polymer having nitrogen and/or oxygen atoms in the polymer chain, a liquid in which the polymer is normally insoluble and a boron trihalide. Specified polymers are polyamides, polyurethanes, polyureas, polyesters, and polysulphonamides. Specified liquids are water and organic compounds containing up to 8 carbon atoms which are alkane carboxylic acids, alkyl ketones, alkanols, polyhydric alcohols, nitroparaffins, water soluble esters and nitriles of carboxylic acids. Examples are given.
