Alcohols are prepared by (a) reacting a branched-chain olefin with an aqueous acid of formula HOX in which X is a halogen under known conditions for the hypohalogenation of a double bond so that a halohydrin is formed, (b) subjecting the haldrydrin to treatment with an alkali under known conditions for converting a halohydrin to a cyclic oxide so that the corresponding cyclic oxide is found and (c) subjecting the oxide to hydrogenation. Mixtures of olefins may be used as starting materials. A preferred starting material is 4-methylpentene-1 obtained by the dimerization of propylene. The acid HOX may be formed in situ by the use of water and halogen, e.g. bromine. Suitable alkalis for use in step (b) are, for example, sodium carbonate or lime. Step (c) is carried out in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. Raney nickel. In an example 4-methylpentene-1 is converted to 4-methylpentanol-1 and 4-methylpentanol-2.
