1,121,892. Fuel elements. KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH DES LANDES NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN e.v. 28 June, 1966 [29 June, 1965], No. 28890/66. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises a can containing a loose filling of particles of fuel material, which particles are each coated with a manysided substantially spherical layer of pyrolytic carbon and/or a carbide or oxide, the can being closed in a vacuum-tight manner. The particles may be of VC 2 . The thermal conductivity of the particle bed is substantially increased by the particles having many-sided coatings as opposed to spherical coatings, and may be further increased by filling the interstices set up in the loose bed with helium under atmospheric or elevated pressure. In the embodiment described, the particles are contained within a hollow casing of annular cross-section. |
