A long-life spatial optical modulation element free from a deterioration in optical modulation characteristics even if an ultra-short-pulse, high-power laser beam is used as a modulation drive light. The spatial optical modulation element (1) comprises a low-refractive-index layer (4) consisting of a transparent material being lower in refractive index than the above dielectrics and disposed between a prism (2) and an optical functional material layer (3) consisting of an optical functional material changed in refractive index by light irradiation. A spatial optical modulation method characterized by using this spatial optical modulation element (1) and controlling, at the interface between the prism and a low-refractive-index layer, the reflection of a modulated light (5) entering via a prism by a modulation drive light (6).
