The modular element (11) has a housing (31) provided with side coupling contacts (37) for electrical connection with at least one further modular element, the housing acting as a circuit board carrier, the circuit board (30) provided with electrical components (28) for control, monitoring and/or communications functions. The side coupling contacts lie flat against one another when the adjacent modular elements are fitted together. An independent claim for a modular valve battery is also included.
