The method involves performing a sink-float separation of residues, in a flotation unit (5). Low density materials floating in the unit are evacuated by salt water flowing via an overflow orifice. The water flowing via a grid (71) is re-circulated towards the unit, to direct the materials on the grid towards a conveyor belt (81). Denser materials (12) at bottom of the unit are removed by a scraper and passed on conveyor belts (82, 83). The unit contains the salt water and the orifice is situated under a water level in the unit. An independent claim is also included for a device for separation of residues of refuse incineration.
