<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diagnosing and treating method useful in various kinds of cancers such as human prostate cancer. <P>SOLUTION: A STEAP (Six Transmembrane Epithelial Antigen of the Prostate) protein and a polypeptide fragment thereof are created by using a STEAP gene encoding the STEAP exclusively or predominantly expressed in the prostate, as well as in prostate cancer or a complementary polynucleotide in a novel family of cell surface serpentine transmembrane antigens by a gene recombination technique.
