PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely and easily producing 1-(6-methylpyridin-3-yl)-2-[(4-methylsulfonyl)-phenyl]ethanone useful as an intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals, etc. SOLUTION: The 2-[(4-methylsulfonyl)-phenyl]-3-(6-methylpyridin-3-yl)-3-oxo-propionic acid ester is expressed by general formula (1) (R1is a 1-4C alkyl). The method for the production of 1-(6-methylpyridin-3-yl)-2-[(4-methylsulfonyl)-phenyl]ethanone comprises the use of the above ester. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
