The steering device for an industrial truck has a steering component (17) rotatably mounted by means of a bearing element, and a sensing device (20) for the sensing of the rotational movement of the bearing element and which receives steering signals from the sensing device and controls at least one steering motor in dependence upon these signals. The bearing element indirectly or directly carries a magnetic coding, and the sensing device comprises at least one magnetic field sensor (21) by means of which the magnetic coding is scanned.
