The pump (10) has a volute (26) connected to the impeller end (24) of a housing (12) for receiving pressurized water from an impeller (22), and a flushable water seal (68) with stationary water seal component (70) and rotatable water seal component (78). Nozzles (92) direct water jets against the seal surface (76) of the stationary water seal component to carry away worn particles from the seal surface. Passages (86,88) connect the volute to a plenum (90) from which the nozzles are extended. The seal surface surrounds the rotatable shaft (14) arranged inside the housing.
