PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for short wavelength recording (high density recording). SOLUTION: In the coating type magnetic recording medium, ferromagnetic magnetic powder of substantially spherical particles having 2 to 30 nm average particle diameter is used as magnetic powder contained in a magnetic layer and a squareness ratio SRm in the recording and reproducing direction and a squareness ratio SRt in the medium thickness direction are set to be 0.4 to 0.7 and 0.01 to 0.2, respectively.
