PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a luminous body in which persistence characteristic is improved, e.g., afterglow life is prolonged and to provide a luminous body produced by the production method. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the luminous body by using a compound represented by the formula MAl<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>(M is at least one metal element selected from a group consisting of Ca, Sr and Ba) and further containing at least one rare earth metal element selected from a group consisting of Eu, Dy, Ce, Pr, Sm, Tb, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb, the compound is irradiated with neutron.
