PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member formed with a Cr-B-Si-N alloy film having excellent wear resistance, scuff resistance and peeling resistance at a reduced manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: A piston ring 1 is composed of a base metal 2, a nitriding layer 3, and the Cr-B-Si-N alloy film 4. The base metal 1 is an alloy of an Fe system or Al system or Ti system. The nitriding layer 3 is formed by diffusing nitrogen into a surface layer of the base metal 1 by a known nitriding treatment. The Cr-B-Si-N alloy film 4 is coated on the outer peripheral sliding surface (a part corresponding to the sliding surface) of the nitriding layer 3 by a PVD (physical vapor deposition) process. The Cr-B-Si-N alloy film 4 contains 0.05 to 10.0mass% B, 0.05 to 10.0mass% Si, 10.0 to 30.0mass% N, and the balance Cr. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
